How to best prepare for your nose job!

Getting surgery can be a pretty nerve wrecking experience for most individuals. Whether it’s your first surgery, or your fifth, there’s always that little bit of worry. It is inevitable for us to think of the worst things that could possibly happen during or after surgery. But the best way to prevent these nightmares from coming true is by preparing for surgery the right way. Preparation is often key to ensuring your safety during and after your surgery. Just like with any other surgery, there are certain steps and tasks you should follow before entering the operation room for your nose job surgery.
Before your scheduled surgery date, it is likely that you will meet with your plastic surgeon once or twice. Discussing all important aspects of the procedure and preparation with your doctor is essential.
  • Medical history
  • Discussing your medical history is one of the most important conversations during your visit. You must tell your doctor your goals and motivation for surgery as well as any medical conditions you may have. Your doctor will ask you about any previous surgeries, medications, and history of nasal obstruction. If you have any bleeding disorders, it is important to mention these.
  • Physical exam
  • A couple weeks before your surgery, you will have a complete physical examination done along with blood work. It is important to make sure you are in great health before undergoing any type of surgery. A physical exam of your nose will also help your plastic surgeon see what needs to be done and fixed during your rhinoplasty.
  • Bring photographs
  • Although your doctor will most likely take a few pictures of your nose at the office, it is a good idea to bring a few pictures of your nose from different angles. Bringing pictures of what you want your nose to look like after surgery is also important. You want to give your doctor a clear idea of exactly how you want your nose to look.
  • Avoid certain medications
  • Two weeks before surgery, it is very important to avoid blood thinners such as ibuprofen or aspirin. These medications can increase bleeding.
  • Stop smoking
  • Smoking before surgery is one of the biggest ‘no-no’s’. Smoking slows down the healing process and increases the chances of infection. You want to make sure you do everything possible to make your recovery fast and smooth.
As long as you follow all doctor orders and do everything possible to make sure you are in great health, you should not have anything to be worried about!
